Left the great white north, to take up residence in the South Bay area of California. At LinkedIn one of the main goals of the SRE is to "Keep the site up" and ensure services respond in a timely manner (measured in milliseconds). I am building infrastructure that supports the LinkedIn recommendations infrastructure. For example "People You May Know", "Jobs You May Be Interested In" and such.

Systems Engineer - Lawful Access Systems

Stepped away from a people leadership role to assume a position as an individual contributor within the BlackBerry Lawful Access organization. As the name suggests, time was spent interfacing with law enforcement, government, military and regulatory agencies. We had a clear mission with an open slate as to how we could design our infrastructure. Network intensive applications developed in C/C++ were deployed across the RedHat platform, with tools such as SaltStack, Ansible and Graphite for the monitoring and metrics side. Internal tooling was written in Python, making use of libraries such as Scappy, Bottle, Django and Construct.

Led one of the teams in BlackBerry Infrastructure that had its hands in all pieces of the core BlackBerry stack. Everything from core message routing (between mobile carriers and BlackBerry network links), BlackBerry Internet Browsing ('BIS-B'), BlackBerry Internet Email ('BIS-E'), Over the air Software loading and account provisioning infrastructure. The infrastructure organization was quite found of Linux, over the years we supported LFS, Ubuntu, CentOS, RedHat, OEL and SLES. Somewhere in here I moved from Perl to Python as the tooling language of choice.

Sentex is a regional Internet Service Provider located in Cambridge Ontario, Canada. Sentex provides DSL, dial-up and co-location services. We ran FreeBSD on all our production infrastructure, my job was support the ISP stack - sendmail, bind, apache, radius. At this time Perl was my scripting language of choice.
